CALICO dress NO. 15
‘spectrum people, wakefield, UKWeaving Stories in Wakefield
Wakefield’s Calico Dress is part of the Yorkshire Calico Dress initiative for West Yorkshire’s WOVEN Festival, hosted by Spectrum People. Our dress is all about stories personal, collective, big or small.
Those who contribute a patch become part of the project as Story Weavers, sharing a story, memory, or idea through stitch. Groups are supported by Weave Guides, facilitators who create welcoming spaces for participants to develop their ideas. So far, we have 16 community groups and 37 individuals actively involved!
Our Story Weavers span all walks of life. From young children aged 3 upwards and home education families, to mental health and wellbeing groups, historic house volunteers and sight-impaired crafters. We are proud work alongside LGBTQIA+ groups, people living with long-term or life-limiting conditions, local craft circles and sanctuary-seeking groups.
Together, our project brings together a vibrant tapestry of multi-faith communities and diverse global cultures.Once all the patches are finished, the dress will be assembled by The Gathering Circle, a dedicated team entrusted with thoughtfully arranging and stitching each patch into place to form one collective expression of Wakefield’s stories. The completed garment will be showcased alongside four other dresses (from Kirklees, Calderdale, Leeds, and Bradford) at the WOVEN Festival in June 2027.
