CALICO dress NO. 7
Pietermaritzburg, Durban, South Africa, 2024 – ongoing
Commissioned by quilter Ronél Pistorius after The Red Dress exhibition at the International Quilt Festival 2024 ‘Voices in Cloth’.
---
The Calico Dress South Africa project is an initiative aimed at uniting the diverse cultural landscape of South Africa through the voices and stories of its women. This project seeks to provide a platform where women from different backgrounds in the country can celebrate and share the richness of their heritage, traditions and experiences.
The garment will become a living canvas, symbolising the interconnectedness of all South African women. The project aims to foster intercultural knowledge, mutual respect and appreciation, bridging gaps and breaking down barriers. It will not only highlight the beauty of diversity but also strengthen the collective identity of South African women.
Former president of the Good Hope Quilters Guild Ronél Pistorius and other cultural facilitators are approaching groups across the country inviting them to work on parts of the dress, alongside seeking funding to support the outreach and a long-term sponsor and custodian. It is hoped the completed Calico Dress South Africa can be celebrated on a Women's Day or the nation’s annual Heritage Day.
