CALICO dress NO. 8
Wardown House, Museum & Gallery, Luton, UK, 2024 – ongoing
Local communities will add to the calico dress over 15 months before its planned display in Spring 2026 at Wardown House, Museum & Gallery, Luton.
---
Guided by arts and cultural programmes coordinator Hafiza Mohamed, Wardown House, Museum & Gallery began its calico dress in Autumn 2024 through embroidery workshops with participants invited to stitch their stories into the eighth sister dress to The Red Dress.
The garment is a fluid and organic project which aims to be an audience development tool by responding to and being inclusive of local groups. It will both travel out into the community to be embroidered on and bring people together at Wardown House (part of The Culture Trust, Luton).
One contributor has already created a cross-stitch butterfly in pride colours in support of her transgender daughter’s journey. It is hoped that Calico Dress No. 8 will continues to capture diverse and authentic narratives before its later display.
