SECTION OF DRESS: Pomegranate
A symbol of new life and beginnings
I met Cholpon at an exhibition of the Red Dress in Cologne, Germany. With a shared love of textiles we connected instantly and I enjoyed hearing about her country’s textile heritage and seeing images of her own textile art - which often incorporates traditional Kyrgyz felting techniques. It became clear to me that Cholpon’s voice should be on the Red Dress, and I was dleighted when she agreed to add her own motif to the garment over the next few hours.
Cholma explained that whenever she embroiders it is always some kind of seed, as she is drawn to the potential of a new life beginning. She chose to create a pomegranate in this instance because of it’ ‘redness’, which is shared with the dress and with blood. In Kyrgyz culture blood is something positive “because it is ‘life’, it shows new things, a new life beginning and ripening”.
