SECTION OF DRESS: Military Medals
An honouring of many years in the Royal Air Force
Kim’s embroidery is a personal representation of her 17 year career as a Commissioned Officer in the Royal Air Force; a modest version of her military medals. Her piece was created using trellis stitch, backstitch and appliqué. Retiring in 2019, she received the Iraq campaign medal for her service during TELIC9-10, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the RAF Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
She comes from a long line of serving personnel but in particular her father and paternal grandfather served with Royal Navy – both spending time in the beautiful Mediterranean island of Malta, where her grandfather took part in the Malta Convoys in 1941 aboard HMS Rodney.
Coincidentally, Kim went on to marry into the Maltese Scicluna family from Fleur-de-Lys, Birkirkara and Mosta. Her husband and their 2 children are Maltese citizens and she hopes her application to join them as a Maltese citizen will be complete by Autumn 2022.
Kim is now a student at the Royal School of Needlework where many of her embroidery pieces are regularly inspired by the colours and habitat of her favourite little Mediterranean paradise.
